A novel algorithm for tumor characterization by analysis of transversal relaxation rate distributions in MRI

A novel algorithm to determine transversal relaxation rate distributions is presented to characterize tumors and neoplasic tissue. The methodology is applied to a variety of tumors with different degrees of malignancy as well as to healthy tissue. The results show that when there is malignancy if frequently happens in a definite relaxation rate window outside of which only liquid or benign neoplasic tissue are present. The methodology developed in this work can be easily implemented in any type of scanner at any magnetic field an d can be extended to study other pathologies.
